Vying for the Viscount

“‘Turnips?'”

DefenseofHonorCover.jpg

For Hudson, the newly titled Viscount Stildon, moving to England from India where he was born and raised was already an arduous enough endeavor. When he learns the fate of the racing empire he inherited along with his title depends upon him getting in the good graces of another stable owner, he’s even more at a loss.

The stable at the neighboring estate has been Miss Bianca Snowley’s refuge for years, and when a strange man appears to be stealing the horses, she jumps to their protection without a second thought. Upon learning Hudson is actually the new owner, she can’t help but be intrigued by the area’s newest eligible bachelor.

Any thought of romance is quickly set aside, however, when Hudson proposes they work together to secure suitable spouses for each other. As their friendship grows, Hudson and Bianca begin to reconsider what they truly want in life. But will societal expectations and the weight of their responsibilities keep them from pursuing their true desires?

“‘Everyone’s life has a committee. You need to decide whose on yours. And who isn’t.'”

My Thoughts

Okay, ya’ll – you know that scene in Sleepless in Seattle where Meg Ryan is driving down the road singing “Horses, horses, horses, horses?” That’s this book. So many horses, so little time!

Bianca is a firecracker; you can’t help but fall in love with her in the first five pages. (I don’t count the prologue.) More pages in, you sympathize with her struggles at home, then you admire her concern for Hudson’s misguided “love” interest. Kristi has a way of writing which pulls you into the category of “fictional characters that I wish were real and my friends.” Bianca falls into that category.

Hudson is…a man. He’s charmingly oblivious to the love of his life because he’s so set on his goals. Admittedly, it made me yell out loud at him a few times. The important part is he comes around in the end to give Bianca her happy beginning.

Kristi brings a surprising amount of depth to her secondary characters. In the end, you realize that everyone has good and bad sides and that even the characters that are aggravating you the whole book have good moments and their own pasts influencing who they are.

For Kristi’s Good Little Readers fandom: #mytrent and #teamaaron both make appearances. I love how Kristi has given us more insight into “I am illegitimate” Aaron as he becomes Hudson’s confident.

“”Lord Trent buys horse byproduct from a couple of the stables in the area…apparently that’s a required element for growing pineapples.’ ‘For Pineapples?…I’m never eating pineapple again.””

I encourage you to pick up a copy. Those of you who have read Kristi’s previous books, we also get to revisit characters (like Trent! and Aaron!) from her last two series: Hawthorne House and Haven Manor.

About the Book

Book: The Thief of Lanwyn Manor

Author: Sarah E. Ladd

Genre: Regency Romance

Release Date: January 7, 2020

Thief of Lanwyn Manor

In this sweet Regency romance, Julia knows Matthew Blake, copper mine owner and very eligible bachelor, is the gentleman she should set her eyes upon. But why can’t she steal her gaze away from his younger brother, Isaac?

Cornwall, England 1818—Julia Twethewey needs a diversion to mend her broken heart, so when her cousin invites her to Lanwyn Manor, Julia eagerly accepts. Lanwyn Manor is at the heart of Cornwall’s mining industry, and as a guest Julia is swept into its intricate world. It’s not long, though, before she realizes something dark lurks in the home’s ancient halls.

As a respected mine owner’s younger son, Isaac Blake is determined to keep his late father’s legacy alive through the family business, despite his brother’s careless attitude. In order to save their livelihood—and the livelihood of those around them—the brothers approach the master of Lanwyn Manor with plans to bolster the floundering local industry. Isaac can’t deny his attraction to the man’s charming niece, but his brother has made his intentions to court the lovely guest clear. And Isaac knows his place.

When tragedy strikes, mysteries arise, and items go missing, Julia and Isaac find they are pulled together in a swirl of strange circumstances, but despite their own best efforts to bow to social expectations, their hearts aren’t so keen to surrender.

My Thoughts

I enjoyed this new story from Sarah E. Ladd. We see one of the children from her previous novel The Governess of Penwythe Hall all grown up. But while life at Penwythe Hall was idyllic, Lanwyn Manor is steeped in lore of curses and ghosts with a town seemingly set against the family.

With her movements restricted by her overbearing aunt and questionable safety, Julia learns to make the most of the situation given finding moments to meet Isaac and divine Matthew’s true character. I admire her devotion to her cousin, Jane, determined to stick by her side no matter her aunt’s manipulations. While she tends to be a quiet heroine, in that lies her strength as she falls in love and asserts her heart.

Isaac too has a quiet strength which makes them a good pair. I do wish he would’ve been a bit more assertive, but in the end, he stands where it counts after having worked behind the scenes to unravel the mystery. While he wants to keep Julia safe, he doesn’t become overbearing or try to tell her what to do. That is a nice change in hero!

I look forward to the next book where I hope we continue to see the grown up Trethewey children.

Welcome to another installment of First Line Fridays, hosted by Hoarding Books. Today is an FLF from one of my go-to authors; Laura Beers. See my full review on Goodreads.

Barons daughter

The Baron’s Daughter by Laura Beers

“The coach slowed to a creaking stop outside an unobtrusive, two-level, white building, near the outskirts of the fashionable part of London.”

A Deceptive Bargain

The Beckett Files

Today’s post is the newest book in The Beckett Files by Laura Beers!

About The Book

Deceptive BarginHiding from the horrors of her past, Miss Martha Haskett is content living her days serving as a lady’s maid to her friend Eliza, the Marchioness of Lansdowne. But then her father, the new Earl of Waterford, shows up, with the shocking news that she is now a titled lady. Further turning her life upside down, he proposes a bargain. She will have a single Season in London, and if she does not marry by the end of the Season, she will be gifted with her dowry and a small estate. Despite her mistrust of her father, Martha accepts his offer, but can’t seem to let go of the anger that has been festering inside of her, or her discomfort with a position in Society where she feels she does not belong.

Dr. Emmett Maddix is tired of the frivolity of the ton and spends his time atoning for his past sins by providing medical care to the poor. His life takes an unexpected turn when he is recruited to be an agent of the Crown. He is assigned to run a charity hospital as a front to collect information about a vicious band of smugglers known as The Cursed Lot, who have managed to overtake the entire town of Gravesend with a reign of murder and oppression.

As Emmett delves further into The Cursed Lot’s domain, he quickly discovers that not everything is what it seems, and it will take far more than one new agent to take down this ruthless gang. While the tangled web of intrigue begins to unravel, Martha and Emmett battle an undeniable but unspoken attraction that grows between them. But before either can be ready to share their hearts, they must overcome their past mistakes, and find their own reasons to keep fighting. With more than just their hearts at stake, surviving the mission will be more difficult than either of them could ever imagine.

My Review

I thoroughly enjoyed another clean romance by Laura Beers – I can’t get enough of them. But, Martha does have a difficult back story that some may find a trigger point (physical and sexual abuse). However, I think Laura does a great job bringing the seriousness of the issue and Martha’s healing without allowing the burden of her story to burden the reader. While I wouldn’t place the story in the inspirational genera, Laura offers the reader solid advice about healing and being at peace with your past through the development of her characters.

On the lighter side, the story is filled with cameos from already loved characters and their antics. While Laura offers enough back story to read this novel stand alone, I’d recommend reading the previous books in the series as it will enhance your enjoyment of this story and because they’re just good stories.

Other books in the series: #1 and #2#3

I received a copy of this book from the author but was not required to give a review. I did it because I really love them.

A Defense of Honor

Happy Tuesday, all! I don’t know about ya’ll, but it hasn’t gotten crazy hot here in Baltimore. Perfect reason to curl up with a read while sequestering myself in my bedroom- the only room in the house with air conditioning.

A defense of honor

When Katherine “Kit” FitzGilbert turned her back on London society more than a decade ago, she determined never to set foot in a ballroom again. But when business takes her to London and she’s forced to run for her life, she stumbles upon not only a glamorous ballroom but also Graham, Lord Wharton. What should have been a chance encounter becomes much more as Graham embarks on a search for his friend’s missing sister and is convinced Kit knows more about the girl than she’s telling.

After meeting Graham, Kit finds herself wishing things could have been different for the first time in her life, but what she wants can’t matter. Long ago, she dedicated herself to helping women escape the same scorn that drove her from London and raising the innocent children caught in the crossfire. And as much as she desperately wishes to tell Graham everything, revealing the truth isn’t worth putting him and everyone she loves in danger.

My Review

Kristi approaches some hard topics in this story that I think are great that a Christian Fiction author is getting into. I also appreciate how none of the characters and black and white – not all good, not all bad. Kit struggles with the motivations and decisions she felt forced into to create a stable environment for the women and children she strove to help. Given the same situation, I don’t know what decision I would’ve made. It brings to the forefront the question of “do two wrongs make a right?” And if it doesn’t, how do you survive when there seems to be no other way? I relate to Kit’s internal battle as I’m also someone who just figures out a way to take care of everyone without stopping to trust God and let Him provide for me.

IMG_6629The women in this story make/have made mistakes and are trying to figure out how to move forward and do life in the culture of their time. Illegitimate children were a huge problem in the regency period with soaring numbers where women faced all the consequences, the the men mostly none. With the intensifying recent awareness of the #metoo movement, Kristi gives us a peak into the lives of women facing the same challenges in the early 1800’s. Add to it the Christian worldview without getting preachy or judgmental, framed in a genre that gets serious, but not overwhelming, I count it as a must read.

Kristi has mentioned some of the statistics in a live video and I emailed her for more info to share. She says, “Basically, prior to the extended Regency period (late 1700s to about 1830) the percentage of children born out of wedlock in the UK was around 3%. During the Regency period that number rose to somewhere between 7% and 9%. The church’s backlash against this – for better or for worse – is, I think, part of what drove into the strictness of the Victorian period. Laws around the care of illegitimate children were changed in 1834 to try to discourage it. ”

I am looking forward to diving into Daphne’s story and getting more into the questions of how do we move forward after we’ve made a mistake? How do we face God and forgive ourselves? I admire Daphne’s strength and joy that appears to come from within and her relationship with God.

I was provided a copy by the publisher. All opinions are honest and my own.
