Author Interview

  1. Here at Kat’s Corner books, we’re fans of cats, but love all pets. Do you have a pet?
    • Mindy: We do! Two sassy dogs. Both of them have attitude, so things get lively sometimes.
  2. Open your text message app. What are the first 10 words that come up automatically?
    • Mindy: Me too! I’m excited to see it with lights on.
    • Kat: I am dying to know what you want to see with lights on. A house, a car, a submarine?
  3. When you are not writing, what other “hats” do you wear?
    • Mindy: Mom, grammy, cook, maid… You know, an array of very glamorous things. 😉
    • Kat: That why we read, to live vicariously in glamorous lives! Next stop: Hollywood.
  4. What is one thing you’d like your readers to take away from this story?
    • That nothing is too big for God. He can bring our greatest blessings out of our biggest mistakes.
  5. For readers new to the Love Inspired Line what is something you’d like them to know?
    • Mindy: Love Inspired books may be shorter reads, but they’re still satisfying and many of them tackle some tough subjects. And they are always uplifting with a guaranteed HEA.
  6. What is a passion you have besides writing?
    • Mindy: Food and family. I love to cook (and eat), but cooking is always more enjoyable when you’re doing it for someone you love.
    • Kat: I agree – I like cooking but not just for myself.
  7. If you could meet one person who is no longer living who would you pick and why?
    • Mindy: My husband’s great grandmother. She was born in the late 1860s, orphaned at four years old when her parents died in a yellow fever epidemic, inherited thousands of acres of land that’s still in the family today and married a statesman. Definitely an interesting woman.
  8. Can you tell us a little about your current WIP?
    • Mindy: I’m at the very beginning stages of book three in my Bliss, Texas series. And, unless something changes, it involves a castle—in Texas. 😉
    • Kat: I like castles!
  9. How do you approach faith in your books?
    • Mindy: Prayerfully. I know God has a plan not only for each and every story, but for a reader He knows needs to hear the message that is inside. I want to be sure it’s His words that are on the page, not mine.

My Review

A Father’s Promise by Mindy Obenhaus welcomes us to the new community of Ft. Bliss with a group of cherished friends. I like each of these ladies already and appreciate that they’re a bit older than your typical romance heroines (30s-40s).

In this first of the series, we get to know Laurel, who struggles with abandonment by her father. While I understand how that can affect your entire life there were times that I got frustrated with how much she projected her father’s decisions onto Wes. But, she is a great mother and a kind friend. One thing that I admired was her willingness to forgive – a plot twist you’ll have to read to find out.

Wes is up front about his move to Iraq, which I appreciate after so many books where one or the other tries to hide the fact that they’re leaving in a set time. Laural and Wes have to face that together and both struggle with what that means for them. The way Wes dived into parenting despite his concerns made me smile with some adorable moments.

Hubs read this out loud to me and made me wait to finish it until he could read again. His thoughts: “It was an intriguing little book, but she could add in some military conspiracy twists.” LOL. I reminded him that the suspense books have PURPLE spines. 😉

I received a copy of this book for the purpose of this tour. I was not required to post a positive review. All opinions are my own.

MY THOUGHTS

Life is not always cupcakes, even though Ruby Jane bakes for comfort. In Wyatt we pick up the Marshall saga with Wyatt looking for Coco and Ruby Jane laying low pining for York. These siblings mirror real life in that while we can have a solid home life, Christian parents, and a good Heavenly Father, we still find ourselves struggling with the question of are we ENOUGH?

Wyatt and Coco have spent much of their adult life feeling shame, running from their assumptions about reality. Susies takes us through their story, teaching the reader about God’s grace, that HE CHOSE us, and because of that we are enough. I love how Susie takes an edge of your seat story and weaves these truths so they sink into the reader’s bones.

My heart aches with both of them and wants to shake some sense into their brains, in turn. They love so deeply, almost to a fault. In this way, Wyatt was a refreshing personality change from his domineering brothers, a romantic through and through. Swoon.

There’s a nice amount of spice and passion between both couples in this story, providing a bit of heat while maintaining a clean reads. Susie does a great job of addressing Wyatt’s and Coco’s choice to have sex before marriage, the consequences, and the healing, all from a solid Biblical, but real, perspective.

Can’t wait for the conclusion with Ruby Jane!

Ford

Intrigue. Faith. Romance. Three things you can count on in a Susie May Warren book. Today’s feature is FORD.

Navy Seal Ford Marshall isn’t the kind to stand by and let a woman get hurt—especially when it involves his twin sister, RJ. So, when she makes the news, accused of sparking an international incident, he doesn’t care what it takes—he’s going to find her and bring her home.

But he might need a little help, so he calls on the woman who has had his back during the last three years—Petty Officer Scarlett Hathaway, former communications expert-turned Rescue Swimmer candidate. She’ll help him get into the country, watch his back, and…well, they might be able to have one last mission together before she leaves for a new life, a life he very much wants to be a part of now that she is off his team. Maybe he can convince her to give them a chance to kindle the spark that’s simmered between them for years. Navy Seal Ford Marshall isn’t the kind to stand by and let a woman get hurt—especially when it involves his twin sister, RJ. So, when she makes the news, accused of sparking an international incident, he doesn’t care what it takes—he’s going to find her and bring her home.

Scarlett Hathaway isn’t sure what future she wants—not when she suddenly has to care for her little brother. Maybe she should quit the Navy and start a life with the man she can’t seem to get out of her heart. So yes, she’ll help Ford find his sister. And maybe, along the way, figure out if they have a future.

But finding RJ somewhere in the vastness of Russia with the FSB chasing them will push Scarlett beyond even her courage and make her question everything she thought she wanted…including Ford. What will it cost her to love a man who saves the world? Navy Seal Ford Marshall isn’t the kind to stand by and let a woman get hurt—especially when it involves his twin sister, RJ. So, when she makes the news, accused of sparking an international incident, he doesn’t care what it takes—he’s going to find her and bring her home.

And when Ford is asked to choose between saving his sister, saving the world from a war, and rescuing the woman he loves…can he live with his decision?

My Thoughts

Susan May Warren has such a talent for balancing romance, intrigue, and spiritual nuggets in her stories. Ford is another installment in that category. Ford struggles with feeling like he has to rescue, to, in a way, control the outcome of a situation; he puts himself in the position of savior. But what happens when things keep going wrong?

I highlighted some deep Biblical truths that were presented as wise advice, questions, and internal conversations with God to apply to my own life. My favorite is the idea that God is not our back-up, He is who makes the way in front of us and we are his back-up. It was a timely reminded.

“You do not need to be the strongest one in the room. You have a breacher. Expect Him. He will not disappoint. Not because you deserve it, not because you work for it, but just Because. He. Period. Love. You. Full stop. End of story.”

I appreciate Scarlett’s questions that stem out of her difficult upbringing; they’re questions I’ve asked and and many others through the centuries. Susie doesn’t shy away from those questions, nor does she gloss over them, but show’s how God can overcome those situations.

All that faith is wrapped up in a page turning story with two pairs racing the clock across Russia. It was fun (Ford would NOT agree with me) watching Ford, a navy seal so prepared for every situation, be so far outside of his element.

I also enjoyed getting to see the perspectives of 4 characters as we also have RJ’s and York’s story.

I can’t wait to see how Coco and Wyatt’s and RJ and York’s story concludes as well.

Oh! And don’t forget to read the author’s note at the back. It’s a good one!

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are honestly my own!

The Enlightment of Bees – JustRead

Spotlight: The Enlightment of Bees by Rachel Linden

Welcome to the Blog Tour for The Enlightenment of Bees by Rachel Linden, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sometimes a shattered dream leads to an amazing journey.

At twenty-six, apprentice baker Mia West has her entire life planned out: a Craftsman cottage in Seattle, a job baking at The Butter Emporium, and her first love—her boyfriend, Ethan—by her side. But when Ethan declares he “needs some space,” Mia’s carefully planned future crumbles.

Feeling adrift, Mia joins her vivacious housemate Rosie on a humanitarian trip around the world funded by a reclusive billionaire. Along with a famous grunge rock star, a Rwandan immigrant, and an unsettlingly attractive Hawaiian urban farmer named Kai, Mia and Rosie embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

From the slums of Mumbai to a Hungarian border camp during the refugee crisis, Mia’s heart is challenged and changed in astonishing ways—ways she never could have imagined. As she grapples with how to make a difference in a complicated world, Mia realizes she must choose between the life she thought she wanted and the life unfolding before her.

In a romantic adventure across the globe, The Enlightenment of Bees beautifully explores what it means to find the sweet spot in life where our greatest passions meet the world’s greatest need.

“The memories are always with us, but sometimes we can ease the way for others. That is what we must do, use our pain to build understanding and empathy, not to build walls. Then it is transformed into a thing of beauty, then our suffering has value.”

MY REVIEW

I’m a book monster; at the top I dog ear pages to keep my place and at the bottom I dog ear for quotes I want to revisit. This book has a lot of bottom corner dog ears.

Rachel Linden has a way with words that will sooth your sole. It’s a combination of lyrical with hard truth forcing the reader to confront their inner-self without pulling the reader into the depths of despair.

This is the first of Rachel’s books I’ve read so I had no clue what to expect. I’ve been reading a lot of fluff lately and at first her style of writing caught me off guard (because, again, fluff ya’ll). But, I quickly realized I had missed falling into a book world where I feel wrapped up in a cocoon; one where I knew I was going to be challenged and face feelings I’ve been ignoring, but knew I would come out better for it on the other side.

I appreciated how Rachel brought her experiences in to give the story depth and meaning. International aid is one of those things that I know exists and I see on news stories, but not a topic I really KNOW about; it hasn’t touched me personally. Through this story I was able to touch that world and develop a deeper level of empathy towards those who struggle with the basic comforts of life.

I liked all of the characters. I felt for Ethan, who struggled with knowing what was familiar and what was the right call for his and Mia’s future. I can’t imagine the agony of wrestling with the decisions he made, and then Mia being strong enough to process through and move to where she needed to be. I loved Nana Alice and her beau who brought smiles and wise words. Rosie is an awesome best friend who also grows and I’m super glad she finds her forever love during the story.

And Mia. In some ways I could relate and in others what she was going through was totally foreign to me, but no matter what, I could put myself in her place and see why she was struggling with decisions, thoughts, and the world around her. I could relate to having long held hopes and the struggle of wondering if those are still meant to be or if what is a good life but different than what I imagined really what I’m supposed to do?

For inspirational readers you’ll see some faith themes woven into the story. However for those who prefer a clean read with some depth but without faith themes, this story is also for you. It speaks to the goodness of humanity and finding the purpose for your life but does not specifically get into the religious beliefs of the characters.

And lastly, here is my favorite quote. I hope one day, I too can find this place.

“‘Remember, Mia, your place in this world is the space where your greatest passion meets the world’s great pain.'”

I received a copy of this book for the purposes of this tour. All opinions are my own.
