SWEET ON YOU

Sweet on You(Bradford Sisters #3)
By Becky Wade
Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 368 Pages
April 30th 2019 by Bethany House Publishers

Britt Bradford and Zander Ford have been the best of friends since they met thirteen years ago. Unbeknown to Britt, Zander has been in love with her for just as long.
Independent and adventurous Britt channels her talent into creating chocolates at her hometown shop. Zander is a bestselling author who’s spent the past 18 months traveling the world. He’s achieved a great deal but still lacks the only thing that ever truly mattered to him–Britt’s heart.

When Zander’s uncle dies of mysterious causes, he returns to Merryweather, Washington, to investigate, and Britt is immediately there to help. Although this throws them into close proximity, both understand that an attempt at romance could jeopardize their once-in-a-lifetime friendship. But while Britt is determined to resist any change in their relationship, Zander finds it increasingly difficult to keep his feelings hidden.

As they work together to uncover his uncle’s tangled past, will the truth of what lies between them also, finally, come to light?

My Thoughts

I feel like I have been waiting for forever for Britt to fall in love with Zander. I can’t even imagine a 10th of what his waiting has been like. He is an insanely loyal man which makes him beyond swoon worthy. While I get the fear of not wanting to screw up a great friendship, I also keep shouting “Kiss her, already!!!!”

And then they do…I have no words…

We see some big character development in Britt through this story. I like a twist on the independent woman in that she takes it too far, carrying a burden of guilt that isn’t hers and declining help because of it. I get a bit of where she’s coming from in that feeling guilty that you didn’t have to go through “X” that your siblings did.

(Tiny, kind of, but not really spoiler for those like me who were agonizing) I am so thankful Becky didn’t make us wait until the end for that first kiss. I think I would have perished. But, I’m not going to tell you when it happens! That would ruin the magic!

I loved checking in with Willow and Nora and their lives; it brought me deeper into their worlds. But, the story was written in such a way that you could read it as a stand alone and not feel lost. I also enjoyed the subplot of unraveling the mystery of Uncle Frank. I have to say, there were some enjoyable twists there that kept me guessing.

If you like contemporary romance with a mystery, but not suspense, thread, delicious chocolate, and a friends to more story, this one is for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

But he’s perfect for her!

Ryan DeMere is definitely enjoying the perks of being Sweetheart Ranch’s new wrangler—the best is working with head chef Bridget O’Malley. He’s fallen head over spurs for the talented and determined beauty. There’s just one hiccup. Bridget is holding out for Mr. Right—and Ryan doesn’t quite meet her requirements. But he’s determined to win Bridget over, because Ryan may not be perfect…but maybe their love could be.

Author Interview

1. Here at Kat’s Corner books, we’re fans of cats, but love all pets. Do you have a pet?

Meet Ozzy. He’s my four-footed muse and even has his own regular column in my monthly newsletter. He’s utterly devoted to me and spends a large portion of his day napping next to my computer monitor. He tolerates my husband (whom he refers to as “the man”), pretty much ignores the dog Nacho, and keeps his distance from our newest family member, Sushi (she originally belonged to my mother and came to live with us after we moved Mom into assisted living last December). Ozzy is a rescue, also like Nacho and Sushi. He believes no one else should have access to me other than him, including “the man”, and sleeps between us at night. Moving him to another part of the bed or the floor doesn’t work, he comes right back.

Sasha says hi!

2. Open your text message app. What are the first 10 words that come up automatically?

Thank you Just People Not For Clay (my son) I’m Ok Best Last

Well, clearly I’m not an interesting person, at least according to my text message app.

I think authors are always interesting!

3. When you are not writing, what other “hats” do you wear?

After I quit the corporate world four years ago, I thought I’d have all this extra free time. Surprise, surprise, it didn’t happen. I’m president of my local Romance Writers of America chapter for the second year in a row and love it. As I mentioned earlier, we recently moved my mom into assisted living. I see to all her needs and visit her at least twice a week. While it breaks my heart to see her senility worsen, I’m grateful for every moment I spend with her. I recently started a book club at the community where she resides and just love talking to the literary ladies, as I call them. They’ve all lead such fascinating lives. I’m also very involved with my high school’s alumni group. We’re very active and have several events every year.  Just this past weekend my class had a reunion and, you guessed it, I was on the committee.

My mom just retired and I’m convinced she won’t have a free moment!

4. What inspired the idea for The Cowboy’s Perfect Match?

It’s funny, there’s a little bit of me in both the heroine Bridget and the hero Ryan. She’s a list maker (raising my hand) and even has a list of her dating non-negotiables. Yes, it’s true. I had a similar list when I was single and dating, though not as lengthy as Bridget’s. Ryan flips houses on the side—kind of like they do on those HGTV shows. I worked twenty-four years in the construction business and was able to bring a lot of personal experiences to the story. Every problem Ryan has while remodeling his house is something we experienced at the construction company in real life.

5) What is one thing you’d like your readers to take away from this story?

Throw away that list of dating non-negotiables. It didn’t work for me, and it doesn’t work for Bridget. Finding your perfect match will happen when it’s supposed to happen. Just be open and available to possibilities. The same goes for anything else in life, like the perfect job or the perfect house.

I agree that you have to be open. No one will be the perfect match. Marriage, no matter what, is hard work. Let’s all acknowledge our humanness.

6) For readers new to the Heartwarming line, what is something you’d like them to know?

Heartwarming books are sweet in that there’s no sex other than kisses, and there’s also no profanity. That doesn’t mean the stories lack romantic tension, don’t have compelling characters, or are short on riveting plots. Quite the opposite. Because the books are longer than the ones I used to write for Harlequin, I find I can dig deeper into the characters and go further with the plot than I could before. The result is a richer, more complex story.

I agree that you dive into some good character development. I think new reader’s who follow my inspiration reviews that this book does not contain any faith themes and is from a secular point of view. I was very comfortable with the level of PDA in the story.

My Thoughts

The Cowboy’s Perfect Match is a sweet clean read set on Sweetheart Ranch. I liked getting to know the characters including Grandma Em and sister Molly, setting and characters coming together to form a great story.

Ryan is a likable guy, full of charm. I understand Bridget’s list making tendencies. I agree with Bridget that there should be some deal breaker items on the man-to-marry list, however all good things can be taken too far and both Bridget and Ryan have to come to realize where their beliefs have a solid base and when they need to be flexible.

I appreciate the way Cathy paced the book, not allowing the characters to go headlong into a full on relationship without being aware of the drawbacks, but keeping the characters growing and moving forward, slowly revealing their growth. But, they also don’t spend the book trying to deny their attraction. They acknowledge it, but also see the very real scenarios.

After getting to know the ranch and characters, I definitely want to find Book 1 and give it a read. I’m not ready to leave Sweetheart Ranch.

I received a copy of this book for the purposes of this tour. All opinions are my own.

A Timeless, Beautiful Allegory of the Biblical Love Story of Ruth and Boaz

The Great Rebellion of 1857 was a remarkably bloody business. At a time when Britain’s imperial influence in India was sparking brutal clashes on both sides, no one could have expected Rena, an Indian woman, to marry a British officer—nor do they understand her decision to follow her mother-in-law to England after her husband’s tragic death.

Once the two widows are in Abbotsville, the stern yet compassionate Lord Barric attempts to help them despite his better judgment. Soon he is torn between the demands of reputation and his increasing desire to capture Rena’s heart for his own.

My Review

I was strangely enthralled with this story as soon as I started. It is not a high action story, which is what usually keeps pages turning, but I was pulled into the story and I could not put it down. I ended up staying up waaayyyy too late just to finish.

When I first read the description I was intrigued with the idea and wondered how Naomi would frame the the story in 1850s England, and I think she picked the perfect setting; an Indian woman followed her mother-in-law, Nell to the land of fair skinned English.

Other similar period books I have read have shown Indian men and women in an exotic viewpoint, often as servants. Naomi doesn’t shy away from the realities of racism and how close to starvation the ladies became. But in all of that, she doesn’t allow the story to get bogged down to the point of tear preferring to lift it with Rena and Nell’s determination to survive and thrive despite their circumstances.

I admire both women for their dedication to each other when splitting up could have made their lives easier in some way, they stuck like glue, a thread of love woven between their hearts. Nell has a strong steady faith and is patient with Rena and her faith journey.

I am not sure how I feel about Barric. On one hand he is stern and distant, struggling with his own prejudices. On the other, his heart slowly turns, running quietly deep. He learns to stand up to others and their assumptions, how to follow his heart. Barruc will never wax poetic to the masses with the grand declaration, but I believe his love for Rena will only grow.

For this story, the end is just the beginning.

I received a copy of this story for the purpose of this tour. All opinions are my own.

Read an Exclusive Excerpt from Shadow Among Sheaves:

She smiled, stepping closer and placing her hand on the horse’s wet snout. Samson was a pretty beast with wide, ponderous eyes and a few splotches of gray around his nose. The soft puff of air Samson snorted into her palm brought a delighted smile to her lips, and she gasped as he bowed his neck to nuzzle his nose against her stomach. She felt her smile leap into a grin. It was a delightful change, to feel joy so deep it finally showed.

Barric circled around Samson to stand beside her, his hands never leaving the reins. “He’s fond of you,” he remarked as Samson dropped his snout against her hip.

“Unsurprising, I suppose. Though he could also be searching you for a carrot.”

Surprised to hear Lord Barric speak so teasingly, and pleased by the gentle light she found in his otherwise tired eyes, Rena laughed her faint agreement. “That will teach me to come empty-handed, won’t it?”

Their smiles both dropped as a young, lanky stable hand came rushing out to take Samson, and Barric relinquished his hold on the reins, nodding his silent thanks.

As soon as the stable boy had disappeared with Samson, Bar¬ric glanced back at Rena. “Are you going home?” he asked, nodding toward the dusty road looping down the hill to William’s house.

She stepped back, realizing she had dawdled longer than she’d first intended. “Yes,” she answered. “I often come this way to avoid the other workers.”

“Might I walk with you?” He turned to hang his whip on a peg. “Just a short stretch of the road?”

Stunned by his request, and a bit suspicious of his motive, she nonetheless nodded. “Yes, of course.”

Barric drew up beside her, his even strides betraying no unease, though he was silent for some time as they made their way down the golden-colored hill.

“You have seemed tired these past few days,” he observed. Rena did not bother to deny it. She’d been working hard to keep up with the others, as Barric had told her she must, and felt wearier for it. She had tried to split her days in half, the mornings spent binding sheaves with the women and the afternoons spent picking for her own stores, but the work was backbreaking, and, as he had already pointed out once before, she was not used to hard labor. “I realize I haven’t really asked you how you are settling in,” he went on.

“Perhaps you’ve been too busy provoking me,” she answered before she could stop herself.

Barric’s eyebrow inched up as he slanted an approving smirk down at her. “Perhaps.”

Rena cursed her honest tongue. She must have been more tired than she thought, to speak so freely to a man of title. “I have been well,” she tried again, a bit more diplomatically. “The house suits us, if that is what you are asking.”

“The people here do not speak to you unkindly?”

“The people do not speak to me at all.” She had meant to sound casual, unaffected, but heard the hurt in her own voice she hadn’t been able to weed out. As Barric’s expression tightened, she hastened to amend, “Except for you, my lord. Of course. And the Wilmots.”

“They are good people,” he agreed quietly. “And will you be coming with them to the festival this evening?”

She hesitated. According to Alice, harvest home was a yearly tra¬dition, a night of raucous drinking and dancing to celebrate the close of the harvest. All of Abbotsville would be there—landowners, stew-ards, even tenant farmers and common laborers. But Rena was none of those things, and she and Barric both knew it.

“Come,” Barric teased, “do not tell me you are afraid to go. I would never have thought it of you.”

“I am not afraid,” she insisted. “I just had not thought about it.”

At her defensive tone, he smiled—a true smile—one that pinched the corners of his eyes and pressed grooves along the outer edges of his mouth. “You ought to come,” he decided. “Everyone in Abbotsville is welcome, and many are the men who would feel lucky to dance with you.”

But, of course, Lord Barric knew this was not true. The men in his fields regarded her mostly with contempt and made no secret of it— they would not count themselves at all lucky to dance with her. Was Lord Barric trying to offer her words of comfort? Or was he trying to convey a message?

Did he want to dance with her?

This was hardly a safe question, and so she asked another. “Do you dance, Lord Barric?”

When he met her gaze, so direct, she was all the more glad she had not stammered in her reply. The man walked a dangerous line whenever he deigned to speak to her. Far too close, she’d think, and then stern enough to cool her blood with a word.

He surprised her with another smile, this one a faint twist at the corner of his lips. “Perhaps you would have to come to find out.”
